Ok, as promised here's my impressions on the new BG album. I dunno if this belongs in band discussion, but there's no real forum for straight music discussion. I suppose this could go in the Metal Discussion section, but I'll let you judge that. Move it to wherever you think it would be most appropriate.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
To start let me say, this album fucking rocks. BG has successfully combined all of the styles found in previous albums into an amazing record. From start to finish, with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 songs, everything sounds great. (Keep in mind that this is after only a few listens, so opinions are likely to change somewhat, for better or for worse is left to be seen).
Ok, so here's the track by track breakdown.
This Will Never End: Really heavy intro. The range in vocals is incredible, they go from low, almost evil sounding, up to the highest that I've ever heard in a BG song. The chorus is also amazing, the choirs tend to sound more like in Imaginations as compared to A Night at the Opera. This is an amazing openning track which sets the mood for a great album.
Otherland: Another great song. This is probably the closest song on the album to the ANATO style. The chorus is very catchy, and the verses and different filler parts also remind me somewhat of Fly. I guess this could be compared to Fly with more orchestration but that wouldn't be doing it justice, as it's also so much more. Again, a great track that you won't want to stop listening to.
Turn the Page: This song is slightly more folk sounding than the typical BG song. The drums as well as the melodies give that folk feeling, not unlike the beginning of Battlefield or even Mirror Mirror. As usual, an amazing chorus with great melodies. An early favorite.
Fly: I won't say much seeing as you've probably heard it already. Slightly odd intro as well as unique percussion throughout. Another really good song.
Carry the Blessed Home: Starts with a slow, soft keyboard tune unlike any BG song before. The song alternates between heavy and soft parts. And what's that? A bagpipe solo? Well, not really a solo, but there is a bit of bagpipe melody in here as well. I'm starting to repeat myself, but this is another awesome track.
Another Stranger Me: This song seems to be the most straightforward on the album. Nothing too surprising here. A lot of cool background guitar melodies here with solid vocals again. Not the strongest track on the album, but still great.
Straight Through the Mirror: You're typical BG song (and that's not saying it's bad). Great verses, amazing chorus. Appart from some slight variations with the guitar, there's not overly adventurous. Oh, did I mention the chorus is amazing?
Lionheart: The intro of this song starts out as very promising. Heavy drumming with crunching guitars. The rest of the song doesn't really stand out too much. There are a lot of different vocal lines layered, especially in the chorus. It needs more listens but for now I'd say its probably the weakest track.
Skalds and Shadows: Not too much different from the version in Fly. The added instruments give it a more epic as well as more medieval feel, somewhat like A Past and Future Secret. A nice ballad which is also similar to The Bards Song.
The Edge: One of the heaviest songs on the CD. Some neat string parts behind the guitars in places. Another great chorus and an overall great song.
The New Order: Another great intro. The beginning creates a really cool mood, fit for the closing song of the album. Need I say that it has a really cool chorus. THe rest is, again, high quality and fairly heavy. And thus end the album, too quickly i might add (Come on, where are our 15 minutes epics ).
After something like 5 years waiting, the album is finally here and it does not disappoint in one bit (other than wanting more, but that's probably a good thing). I don't have much more to say, except buy this album when it comes out, or download the leaked version now (but still buy it when it comes out). 10/10
