On our digital camera, night shot mode causes the shutter to stay open for a few seconds to take in more light so you have a few seconds to move the sparklers around.

I had an old camera a long time ago (really old one ... built in the 70s I think), and it had a manual option for the shutter, so it would stay open for as long as you kept pressing the button. It was great for making shots like this Love these pics.
