I've heard a lot about htis series by Stephen King and I was wondering if any of you have read it. I got curious about it after learning that some of the Demons & Wizards songs are based on the series and though I'd check it out. I've got the first book on hold at the library but it would be nice ot know if I should even bother starting it so if any of you have read it, let me know your impressions.

I am reading the series right now ;D I'm about 1/2 way through the final book. My first impressions were that it's really a clever mix of genres, with evidence of fantasy, post-apocalyptic sci-fi and western elements. However towards the end of the series it's starting to be weighted down a lot by a heavy focus on time travel and the fact that Stephen King writes himself into the book. Many people i've spoken to find these quite clever, though i just find it pretentious and confusing at times. Though definitly give it a go. By the time these problems arise, the series has already had enough time to become addictive. I've never been good at analysing books very well, but i hope this helps. If you have any more specific questions though, let me know

I finished the gunslinger in 2 days, quite a short book actually. It was fairly good but it only really seemed to get going near the end. (Which Im sure is a sign of good things to come). Ill definatly pick up the next one at the library in the next few days.

Yes, it definitly does pick up a bit in the next couple of books, particularly as more characters are introduced. Though it also gets a bit more complicated as the concept of time travel is introduced which i still have mixed feelings about. I've since finished the series and while the ending wasn't completly satisfying, it was at least...original and the series is still definitly worth it. ;D

I'm halfway done book 4 now (Wizards and Glass) and I'm loving it. It's really nice to get to know a lot of the backstory associated with the characters; in fact, i almost find it more interesting than the main plot.

Yes, the backstory definitely is a nice change of pace from the main storyline. It could easily be read as a stand-alone book. Though alas, as you must know it does not neccesarily end happily.... On an another note, theres a theory currently circulating that the TV show LOST is actully based on the world of The Dark Tower. Now, a great show based on the world of an even greater book series. That would be awesome indeed ;D

Finished up the series yesterday. I must say that I'm still getting over the ending though, lol.

Yeah, the ending can be a little depressing, damn it. All goes around in a huge circle really. Spoiler below: Do you think things will happen differently this time around? I mean Roland has Cuthberts horn this time suggesting that things will be slightly different perhaps. But would such changes affect the ultimate outcome this time around or is he stuck reliving the same quest infintely with nothing but small alterations?

Hmmm, well it's bound to happen at least a little different. For one thing Roland has lost most of the fingers on 1 hand, possibly his last gun, and he's also getting old. (Unless I'm missing something and the whole thing just kind of resets). I also recall reading (in the afterword if i recall correctly) that the horn does mean that there still is hope for him to redeem himself.

Hmmm, good point about the fingers. That had sort of slipped my mind. Though I guess i'd been thinking of it more as 'reseting' as you say. I guess we'll never know *sigh*. I am anxious to see if the rumours that the TV show LOST is set in the Dark Tower universe are true though
